This Is a Good Fit If You Are

Buying Your Own Coverage

No employer plan behind you, so the marketplace is the first place everyone tells you to look. It is one option of several.

Self-Employed in Texas

Your income moves month to month, which changes what you qualify for. Getting that estimate wrong is what causes a tax bill later.

Losing Job-Based Coverage

A layoff or a resignation opens a 60 day window. Miss it and your options narrow sharply until the next November.

Comparing Subsidy Against Full Price

You may qualify for help, or you may earn just past the line. The answer decides whether the exchange is even the right place to shop.

Keeping a Specific Doctor

Marketplace networks in Texas skew narrow. Checking your doctors before you enroll matters more here than on any other kind of plan.

Covering a Family

Different ages, different prescriptions, and a household income that has to be estimated for the year ahead.

What the Texas Health Insurance Marketplace Actually Is

The Texas health insurance marketplace is the federal exchange at healthcare.gov, where private carriers list plans that meet Affordable Care Act rules. Texas does not run its own exchange, so marketplace, exchange and healthcare.gov all mean the same thing here.

Who qualifies for marketplace coverage:

1️⃣ You live in Texas and are lawfully present

This is the basic test for buying a plan on the exchange at all.

2️⃣ You are not enrolled in Medicare

Once Medicare starts, marketplace coverage is no longer the right route for you.

3️⃣ Subsidies depend on household income

Financial help is calculated on the income you estimate for the coming year, not last year's.

4️⃣ An affordable employer offer blocks the subsidy

If your job offers coverage that meets the affordability test, you can buy on the exchange but usually without help.

5️⃣ Estimating income wrong has a cost

Take more help than you were entitled to and it is reconciled at tax time. Under-estimate and you leave money unclaimed.

Metal Tiers: What Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Really Mean

Every plan on the Texas health insurance marketplace sits in one of four metal tiers. The tier describes how the plan splits costs with you, not the quality of the care.

How the tiers compare:

1️⃣ Bronze: lowest premium, highest costs when you use it

Suits people who rarely see a doctor and can absorb a large deductible in a bad year.

2️⃣ Silver: the balanced middle, and the only tier with extra help

Cost-sharing reductions attach to Silver alone. Choosing Bronze on premium can cost you that benefit entirely.

3️⃣ Gold and Platinum: higher premium, lower costs at the point of care

Worth it when you have regular prescriptions, ongoing treatment or a planned procedure.

The 2027 Open Enrollment Dates

Open enrollment on the Texas health insurance marketplace runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 for 2027 coverage.

The three dates that matter:

1️⃣ November 1, 2026

Enrollment opens. Plans, prices and networks for the new year become visible.

2️⃣ December 15, 2026

Enroll by this date and coverage starts January 1. This is the date most people actually need.

3️⃣ January 15, 2027

Enrollment closes. Enroll in that final month and you start in February, with a gap you cannot fill later.

4️⃣ Any time, with a qualifying event

Marriage, birth, a move or losing other coverage opens a 60 day window outside these dates.

Buying Outside the Marketplace: When It Costs Less

This is the part the exchange cannot tell you, because it only lists what is on it.

When off-exchange is the better buy:

1️⃣ If you do not qualify for a subsidy

Paying full price on the exchange has no advantage. Off-exchange private plans compete directly and often win on network breadth.

2️⃣ If you want a broader PPO network

On-exchange plans in most Texas counties skew toward narrow HMO networks. The wider PPOs generally sit off-exchange.

3️⃣ If you missed open enrollment entirely

Short term and fixed benefit coverage is not bound by the enrollment calendar and can start in any month.

4️⃣ If you want an HSA-qualified plan

Both sides of the market offer them, but the off-exchange choice is usually wider.

5️⃣ When the exchange IS the right answer

If you qualify for a subsidy, take it. Financial help exists only through the exchange, and no broker can apply it anywhere else.

Why the Provider Network Decides Everything

The premium is the number people compare. On the Texas health insurance marketplace, the network is the number that hurts.

What to check before you enroll:

1️⃣ Narrow networks are the norm here

Many on-exchange Texas plans limit you to a small HMO network, which is how the premium stays down.

2️⃣ Out of network often means no coverage

On an HMO that is not reduced coverage. It is no coverage, outside emergencies.

3️⃣ Check the provider directory, not the brochure

Every doctor and facility you use, confirmed against the specific plan you are considering.

4️⃣ Check the drug formulary too

The tier your medication sits on changes what you pay far more than the premium difference does.

I highly recommend Mark Savoca. I was overwhelmed and anxious about finding health insurance for my family. I knew I didn't want COBRA, but I wasn't sure what my options were. What impressed me immediately was how quickly Mark responded after I emailed him. From that first contact and throughout the entire process, he was always responsive, patient, and willing to answer my questions. Being able to speak with someone (not AI or a robot) knowledgeable and trustworthy brought me tremendous peace of mind and significantly reduced my stress and anxiety. His professionalism and genuine care made all the difference. If you need help navigating health insurance, I highly recommend Mark!!

I spoke with Ric about my situation and he was very helpful. He didn’t beat around the bush and gave me a honest outlook. That’s rare in my experience but definitely appreciated! If I find myself in this type of situation again, I’ll definitely look to him for guidance on all things health insurance.

Inpatient and emergency treatment is an essential health benefit on every plan sold on the exchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Texas uses the federal marketplace at healthcare.gov rather than running a state exchange of its own.

Everything is handled through the federal site, and the plans on it are sold by private carriers licensed in Texas.

Yes. Healthcare.gov, the exchange and the Texas health insurance marketplace all describe the same thing in Texas.

Obamacare is the informal name for the Affordable Care Act, the law that created it.

Almost any Texan who is a citizen or lawfully present and not enrolled in Medicare can buy a plan.

Qualifying for a subsidy is separate and depends on your estimated household income for the coming year, and on whether your employer offers coverage that meets the affordability test.

The usual reasons are being enrolled in Medicare, not being lawfully present, or trying to enroll outside open enrollment without a qualifying life event.

Being turned down for a subsidy is different from being unable to buy a plan at all.

Yes. Off-exchange private plans, association plans, short term coverage and supplemental plans are all bought directly from carriers or through a broker.

If you do not qualify for a subsidy there is often no advantage to using the exchange, and off-exchange networks are frequently broader.

Narrow networks are the most common complaint in Texas. Many on-exchange plans limit you to a small HMO network with no out-of-network coverage.

Premiums without a subsidy can also be higher than comparable off-exchange coverage.

It depends on your age, county, tobacco use, the tier you choose and whether you qualify for a subsidy. The same person can see very different numbers across those variables.

We will price your real options, on and off the exchange, before you commit to anything.
